1.             Overview

The Faculty of Private Law was established based on the proud traditions of the Civil Law and Business Law Divisions, which have been cultivated over nearly 50 years of development at the VNU University of Law. Its history traces back to the School of Law under the University of Hanoi, later evolving into the Faculty of Law under the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, and then becoming the School of Law under Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU).

Following the Prime Minister’s Decision No. 1124/QĐ-TTg, which transformed the School of Law into a member university of VNU, the Civil Law Division was upgraded to the Faculty of Civil Law, while the Business Law Division became the Faculty of Business Law in November 2022.

In February 2025, the Faculty of Civil Law was renamed the Faculty of Private Law after assuming most of the responsibilities of the former Faculty of Business Law. This restructuring, implemented through Resolution No. 185/NQ-HĐT of the University Board for the 2024–2029 term, aligns with Resolution 18-NQ/TW (2017) on streamlining the political system's organizational structure to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

The Faculty of Private Law is responsible for teaching and conducting research in private law, covering areas previously managed by the Faculty of Civil Law—including civil law, marriage and family law, intellectual property law, civil procedure law, and civil judgment enforcement law—as well as private law-related fields formerly under the Faculty of Business Law, such as commercial law, financial law, banking law, competition law, labor law, and social security law.

The Faculty currently has 24 full-time lecturers, including 8 Associate Professors, 12 PhDs, 3 PhD candidates holding master's degrees, and 1 lecturer with a master's degree. Additionally, nearly 100 visiting lecturers and collaborators contribute from various educational institutions, research centers, government agencies, law firms, and enterprises. The faculty members are highly regarded academically, with most having trained or undertaken research in countries and regions with advanced legal systems, such as Russia, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, and Taiwan (China). Faculty members are also frequently invited to participate in legislative drafting, policy consultation, and legal critiques for state agencies across various private law domains.

Beyond undergraduate courses in private law, the Faculty currently oversees master’s and doctoral programs in Civil Law and Civil Procedure Law, as well as economic law. The Faculty is also leading the development of new academic programs to meet growing societal demand, including a master’s program in Intellectual Property Law. It plans to collaborate with other departments to introduce a master’s program in Health Law.

Faculty members have successfully conducted numerous research projects at various levels, including national, ministerial, VNU, university, and city levels. They have also published monographs, reference books, and hundreds of scholarly articles in domestic and international legal journals. The Faculty currently offers comprehensive textbooks supporting the university’s various programs. Additionally, many faculty-authored monographs are widely used for teaching and research at law schools across the country.

2.             Current Research Directions

·                     Fundamental research on private law, including classical and modern models and theories, provides a strong theoretical foundation for the development and refinement of private law in Vietnam.

·                     Offering scientific and practical justifications for improving private law to meet the demands of a socialist-oriented market economy. These reforms are particularly crucial amid the transition toward a digital economy and digital society, international integration, and the pursuit of sustainable development goals.

·                     Focusing on the refinement of policies and laws in response to the growing impact of artificial intelligence and other technological advancements.
